Proposal for Vancian Magic
Submitted by chgowiz on Tue, 12/02/2008 - 17:58Despite the definite lack of love for Vancian magicks in the game that we love to play, it remains a part of the lore and history of D&D and the SRD/D20 system that microlite20 and microlite74 are based from.
Greywulf's original vision of using an abstraction of HP to represent "life force" and using that life force to control and project the mystical forces for spells is an excellent mechanic. I did miss the concept of Vancian magic, though, and decided to incorporate Vancian magic into my own house rules for microlite74. I think this is easily extended to microlite20 as well, as it doesn't involve anything specific beyond magic being part of the setting.
High Magic Spell Costs
Submitted by greywulf on Tue, 06/03/2008 - 10:29Microlite20 is aimed at being a low-magic (and therefore low-maintenance) rules set. The trade-off is that a Mage can cast lots of low-level spells (compared to a core D&D Wizard), but fewer high-level spells. This should be suitable for most styles of play, but if you prefer Magi to be more flexible at higher levels then change the spell costs by shifting them to the right.
Four By Five Magic

The Words can only be taught. There are only nine Words of Power, but they may take an age to fully comprehend their meaning. Often, the Will breaks before the Nine are found. Do you have the power.
